The INNkeepers Letter
by Janet Rogers

What Is An INN?

An Inn is another word for a Bed & Breakfast, except the word Inn can get pretty technical. What am I? A Bed and
Breakfast, or an Inn? Does the number Yikes! I hate this! Eventually some one will figure this all out!

In my own opinion an Inn has six or more guest rooms, and serve breakfast the next morning. The reason, well simply
this, there is a whole different set of laws for INNkeepers operating with six or more guest rooms. In some instances
an Inn can also offer less rooms, BUT, offer a restaurant, pub, or tea room open to the public and would be considered
an Inn.

Today the word Inn is used alot more loosely. A few years ago I did a small survey on Inns, and why owners called
themselves an Inn verses a Bed and Breakfast. Some of the places I called had a restaurant and or pub open to the
general public. (This is an Inn) Others served dinner to their overnight guests so they thought that made them an Inn
(No it does not) One B&B owner thought the word Inn meant "Better" than a Bed and Breakfast. (Absolutely not true)
But the majority of the owners thought the word Inn sounded better with the named they picked out for their Bed and
Breakfast. (OK) When does a Bed and Breakfast become an Inn? When does an Inn turn into a small hotel? Everyone
has an opinion, My best advise is not to get to hung up on the word Inn , and if in doubt ask ahead of time.
