The INNkeepers Letter

Towels

I have four guest bathrooms at the Spitzer House, so buying the right towel is very important. A good quality, name
brand towel always seems to fit the ticket. Believe me you pay for what you get! I remember the first time I bought
towels. I purchased four sets per bathroom. 4 bath towels, 4 hand towels, and 4 washcloths. This seemed to work
out pretty good in the beginning. I always had two fresh sets to put out, while the other two sets were in the washer.
I purchased the towels from a well known department store, and the colors I chose were dark green, white, light pink,
and dark pink.

In about 8 months I realized I had made two bad decisions. Dark green and dark pink towels, they faded. It didn't take
me long to catch on to that one. Stay away from dark colors! especially when you have to wash them constantly. (12
years later guess what? I just bought DARK GREEN towels again.) Did I just have a brain screw or what? Did I forget
what I wrote several years ago in this article about towels? I think so! Anyway they are a designer brand and I got them
at a really good deal. So if they do fade in 8 months I will use them in my own personal bathroom and enjoy the "faded"
luxury, what else can I say, maybe I'll try using that Cheer for dark colors.

Some INNkeepers use all white towels in all their guest rooms. You can bleach them when they get stains, and it does not
matter which room they go in since they all match. Sounds pretty good doesn't it? But I only use white in one guest bathroom,
the rest I use colors. Colors are just too much fun for me give up! I stay away from dark colors and use a color safe bleach
and my towels turn out great!

How many towels should you put out?

Now I know there must be a scientific answer to this. Every B&B book seems to have a different idea, so here is my solution.
Twelve years ago when I first opened I put 2 sets out, and told the guests there were extra towels in the drawer if they needed
them. Twelve years later I put 3 sets out, and tell guests there are extra towels in the drawer if they need them. LOL works great!
So don't wait twelve years just stick three sets out and tell them where the extra towels are. You can't lose.

Notes:
  • As your business grows you will need to buy additional towels.
  • Never use faded, thinning, or damaged towels.
  • Make sure your towels match.
  • Always buy towels on sale.
  • Remember those extra large towels take forever to dry.
  • Buy good quality towels.
  • Multi-colored washcloths make great MU remover cloths.
  • Old wash cloths make great cleaning rags.
  • Hand towels make great dish cloths!
