The INNkeepers Letter
by Janet Rogers

The Guest From Planet X

It wasn't until my sixth year as a B&B owner that I actually experienced this unforgettable nightmare. I mean I've had
little things happen through out the years but nothing could ever compare to this. In fact I can't even go into all the details,
because it would be like re-living it, and I would really like to "pretend" it never happened. But let me just say this, The
man from planet X is out there, I know..... because I have met him personally.

I already had several little red flags go up just during the check-in procedure. My gut kept telling me no, something isn't
right here, but all I could see were dollar signs, after all he would be staying ten nights. The guest I was checking in was from
NY and was here to visit the gentleman that was dropping him off. The gentleman had made the reservations in advance for
the guest, owned a business here in town (and still does.) Paid out of his pocket in full and left (never to be seen again.) He
never came back to see the guest, never called him, and wouldn't return any of his phone calls. Needless to say the guest had
no money of his own, or any means of transportation. The only thing he had was his ticket back to NY.

After the fifth night I could no longer tolerate this guests obnoxious behavior so I called the businessman that had dropped him
off. He told me the guest was my problem, not his. I couldn't even believe what I was hearing. Needless to say I have never
eaten at this businessman establishment, nor will I ever recommend it, I just "pretend" it's not there.

Reading this you might somehow feel sorry for this guest. But let me tell you I know no one that would have tolerated this
mans BAD behavior one day let alone five. I know why the businessman didn't want him around, but I am mad that he dumped
his problem on me.

I guess my point in bringing this situation up to begin with is for the "New INNkeepers." You will have things come up, and you
really need to listen to your instincts. This is not a "perfect job"and no one is exempt from the man from Planet X. Just remember
this, if somebody drops a guest off and that person dropping him off has one leg out the door, and the guest is already acting
obnoxious, those are little red flags. Sometimes the money just isn't worth it.
